This installment of the series spotlights Sang-Ho Hwang, scale account manager and recent winner of Amplitude’s Values Award for Humility.
Tell us about yourself, your role in powering Amplitude, and your personal journey that brought you to where you are today?
Hey everyone, I’m Sang! I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but grew up in Hong Kong. I’ve been living and working in Singapore for the last nine years. I’m an account manager at Amplitude looking after our existing customer base in Asia. I’ve always been in a customer-facing role in the tech industry, and what got me interested in Amplitude is all the good I heard about the product and the people I get to team up with.
How does your role at Amplitude allow you to contribute to the company’s mission of helping companies unlock the power of their products? Can you share an example of a particularly impactful project you've worked on?
It’s awesome to work day-to-day with our existing customers. I work closely with customer success managers to divide and conquer different personas in customer organizations. A perfect example would be how Amplitude works with a global crypto exchange. The company genuinely believes in the value Amplitude brings, and their CEO directs most departments to use Amplitude. They combine Analytics and Experiment to ensure their app is personalized to each user group, and their data team uses Amplitude daily. It’s inspiring to see how they’ve embraced Amplitude, starting at the top with the CEO and with the goal to ensure every employee uses Amplitude moving forward.
Amplitude’s cultural values of humility, ownership, and growth mindset are foundational to the company's success. How do you embody these values in your work?
I think it’s easy to become absorbed by the day-to-day grind of our work, and I’m no different. Returning to these values is essential, especially when we have tough customer conversations. I’ve found that these values enable us to be there for our customers, put their interests before ours, and build trust with them. I’m inspired by Maya Angelou’s quote, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Amplitude offers a variety of benefits and perks to its employees. Which has made the biggest difference for you in your wellness and well-being?
That would be our health and wellness benefit. I like to keep active, so I make the most of my gym membership. I’m not going to lie; I used to do my morning meditations, but I’ve been slacking and need to get back on it.
What is the number one thing that most enables you to do your best work at Amplitude?
This is easy. It’s the individuals I work with daily. Selling requires a strong team behind every opportunity. Even though a customer may only interact with one or two folks, so many amazing people work together behind every opportunity.
We know that music can be a powerful motivator. What song or artist do you turn to when you need an extra boost of energy to power through a tough project or challenge at work?
I love deep house music, which keeps me going, but what boosts me? I’ll have to say old-school rap. Nothing beats a good 2Pac or Biggie song. It doesn’t matter when.
